LIUNA In The Know on Why Politics Matters

Are you in the know about why politics matters? For better or worse, politicians and politics have an impact on our lives.

Politicians make federal, state, provincial, and local laws that define our rights at work. They can make standards stronger and support union rights or they can weaken them. It's up to us as LIUNA members to keep an eye out on what politicians are doing and protect our livelihoods.

Thank you for all that you do to keep this union strong.

Fraternally yours,
Brent Booker
General President

LIUNA In The Know on How a Project Goes LIUNA

Unfortunately, projects and jobs for LIUNA members do not fall into our laps. When given the choice, many contractors will choose to take the low road. That means low wages, low benefits, and low standards.

That’s why we as union members must work so hard to convince contractors and developers to protect our livelihoods.

Every LIUNA member and leader has a role in advocating to ensure that Laborers work goes LIUNA.

Thank you for all that you do to keep this union strong.

Fraternally yours,
Brent Booker
General President

LIUNA In The Know on Laborers Bill of Rights

We asked what basic rights every Laborer should have on the job and we received hundreds of responses.

Our union bargaining agreements ensure our workplace rights - from wages and working conditions to safety. What rights do we still need to fight for? What basic rights should everyone have on the job site - like water and rest breaks - that may not be available to non-union Laborers?

Thank you for all that you do to keep this union strong.

Fraternally yours,
Brent Booker

April - Laborers' Rights

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

What basic rights should EVERY LABORER have on the job? While the original United States Bill of Rights outlined the basic freedoms every American has, our union bargaining agreements ensure our workplace rights; from wages and working conditions to safety.

What rights do we still need to fight for? What basic rights should everyone have on the job site - like water and rest breaks - that may not be available to non-union Laborers?

Let's brainstorm the top 10 rights every worker should have and pave the way for better conditions ahead. Join your brothers and sisters in sharing what you think by filling out this form. It's time to voice what matters most.

See what others are saying like LIUNA Local 242 member Joshua Walker of Seattle, WA. Or, what LIUNA Local 609 members in Framingham, MA have listed as their top ten Laborers' Bill of Rights:

Laborer's Rights

Thank you for all that you do for this union. Together, we are the POWER! Together, we fight STRONGER! Together, we will make a DIFFERENCE!

Fraternally yours,
Brent Booker General President

We are 70,000 strong—across the United States and Canada. LIUNA public employees and non-construction members provide critical health care services, keep our parks clean, pick up our trash, maintain our roads, process our mail, and respond to emergencies both foreign and domestic.

January

As we start the New Year, let's commit to learning more about this great union. From our beginnings in 1903 to where we are today, there is a lot to take pride in.

LIUNA was founded in 1903 when delegates representing more than 8,000 Laborers gathered in Chicago, Illinois. In the early days, LIUNA was known as the International Hod Carriers and Building Laborers Union and conditions on the job were very different than they are today.

You can catch up on the "In the Know" series online at LaborersRising.org/IntheKnow.

Thank you for all that you do to keep this union strong.

Fraternally yours,
Brent Booker
General President
